Charles Wong

Dr. Charles Wong is an Emergency Physician at Rockyview General Hospital (Calgary) and the Medical Director and co-founder of HomeFree Homecare. Through HomeFree, Dr. Wong offers an innovative service called medically-supervised homecare™ (MSH), a model designed for patients who don’t need hospital admission but require more support than traditional homecare provides.

Drawing on a decade of ER experience, Dr. Wong created HomeFree to bring physician-led care directly into the home, addressing common gaps such as limited services, inconsistent scheduling, and lack of medical oversight. This approach helps patients with conditions like dementia, Parkinson’s disease, COPD, CHF, and frailty remain safely and comfortably at home, avoiding unnecessary hospital or facility stays.

HomeFree also assists patients and physicians in navigating AHS funding. Most patients receive over 80% cost coverage, while all physician services are AHS-funded. The program’s strong community impact has earned HomeFree recognition as a finalist for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce 2025 Emerging Growth Award. HomeFree was also recently a podium winner at the Alberta Medical Association’s Inaugural Family Medicine Innovation Forum.

Family Consultations for Medically-Supervised Homecare™: Dr. Wong and his team will provide a no-cost, in-home family meeting to discuss general public homecare offerings as well as how MSH might help in their family’s journey.

Physician Consultations: To assist MDs in navigating the various public and private homecare options for their patients, including how to access AHS funding programs.

Hospital Discharge Program: HomeFree's hallmark service gets ALC patients out of hospital where the main barrier to discharge is insufficient home supports. Triple win: Better outcomes and qualify of life for the patient, lower out-of-pocket costs for the family, while opening up scarce hospital beds.

Palliative Care: HomeFree provides physician-supervised hospice-at-home care for patients who wish to spend their last hours to days in their own home, rather than dying at a facility.
