At Alethea, we believe comprehensive healthcare should be accessible to everyone. Our technology is a tool to simplify physician workflows, expedite specialist communication, and improve patient outcomes. Alethea was founded by Dr. Livingstone, with the goal of improving the diagnostic capabilities at the point of care. We achieve this while streamlining communication between the patient, family physician and specialist.
When you enroll in our platform, you receive a smartphone with a digital otoscope /endoscope. The otoscope can be used to help diagnose common ENT conditions during consultations. Our mobile app provides a clear image of ENT and other visual conditions. These images can be shared with the patient, and included in an eConsult to a specialist.
If you find a condition that requires specialist consultation, an eConsult can be quickly made using the mobile app or online portal. Concise, structured eConsult forms allow for efficient communication with one of our partnering specialists.
Our specialists will review the eConsult within 24 hours of your submission. You will receive a secure message providing you with the advised next steps for your patient. We track and bill for the consultations sent through our platform on your behalf, saving you time.
Ease of Use
+ Which Specialties are included in the platform?

+ How much does this service cost?
We provide the platform to primary care physicians at no cost. Alethea bills AH for any electronic consultations and secure emails performed on the platform, and we utilize a portion of this to help fund distribution of smartphones, endoscopes and product support. We issue payment directly to referring physicians and specialists on a monthly basis.
+ Do we need to get patient consent?
Verbal consent to take the picture and send the image for referral is all that is required (just like obtaining verbal consent for a traditional referral).
+ Is this platform Health Canada approved?
Yes, our digital otoscope is an approved Class I medical device. The artificial intelligence is currently for educational use only, with a submission in progress as a Class II Software as a Medical Device (SaMD).
+ Has Alethea submitted a PIA?
Yes, we have a PIA that has been submitted to the OIPC. We can provide our physicians with details pertaining to the amendment recommended for their clinic PIAs upon enrolment into our platform.
+ Is the Alethea AI database a privacy concern for patients?
No, all images that are collected and stored in our AI database are stripped of any patient data or identifying factors. The CPSA have approved the use of images in this context.
+ Are eConsults required or optional with your platform?
eConsultation is completely optional. Physicians on our platform can use it as a digital endoscope/otoscope, with onboard AI for decision support. If there is a case where you would like some advice, or a request for consultation, that is when this feature should be used. With the images our consulting team members are better able to triage consults, can expedite care and facilitate further investigations. We can have a direct conversation around patient care, without the need to wait for a 1-2 year formal in person consult.
+ We are getting paid to do eReferrals - is this a conflict of interest?
There is no conflict of interest to worry about with using the platform. While you are being reimbursed through Alethea Medical, we bill AH on behalf of all our physicians according to AH eReferral billing codes and guidelines. Certainly, there is an additional financial incentive to using the platform, one which AH put in place to represent the value that these types of tools yield for physicians and patients. We manage the billing so that we can provide the hardware for free, and facilitate access to care without creating prohibitive financial barriers for clinics.
